Goats, threepence and sixpence

We had a club dig near Steyning. The farm had two beautiful Anglo-Nubian goats which were as friendly as the farm dog. The rains came down and we lasted under two hours. I found a 1942 sixpence and a 1960 threepence.

Butterflies & Field Pansies at Brandy Hole Copse

The skies were clear today so I headed off to Brandy Hole Copse in case there were still any Queen of Spain Fritillaries around. I was not alone in this hope - I bumped into Neil Hulme from Sussex Butterfly Conservation. I saw ten Red Admirals, two Painted Ladies and a Clouded Yellow. There were plenty of Field Pansies, the food plant of the Fritillary, in flower at the edge of the maize field.

Bonfire Night & All Hallows

Littlehampton Bonfire Society organised a superb parade, bonfire and firework display last night. Coles Family Fair set up on the promenade. Jackie came over for dinner then we enjoyed the entertainment on the green. Coincidentally this year the Saturday before Guy Fawkes night was Halloween, which considering the origins of these festivals was appropriate. The firework display was brilliant, click here for all photos. The weather forecast was fortunately correct and the predicted gale held off till this morning. The gale lasted till early afternoon, which scuppered the Warninglid detecting rally. Instead I headed for the beach this afternoon and found parking meter fodder and a vending token.
