On Tuesday and Wednesday mornings I met Mark Colvin on the Springhead
estate and we were delighted with our sightings of 16 butterflies: Duke of Burgundy, Small Blue, Painted Lady, Small Copper, Brown
Argus, Holly Blue, Green Hairstreak, Dingy Skipper, Grizzled Skipper, Orange
Tip, Large White, Brimstone, Green-veined White, Speckled Wood, Peacock and Red
Admiral. In addition I saw the following moths: Silver Y, Burnet Companion, Red-fringed Conch, Cinerous Pearl, Silver-ground
Carpet, Dark Strawberry Tortrix and a Cyclamen Tortrix larva. Mark also spotted
a Glow-worm larva wandering across the path. A cuckoo called.
On Wednesday afternoon I did my Mill Hill transect and
recorded Adonis Blue, Brimstone, Dingy Skipper, Green Hairstreak, Grizzled
Skipper, Peacock, Small Heath, Wall. I was told a Clouded Yellow and Common
Blue had also been seen. A large, fat black adder slithered into long grass
and a nightingale sang.
orchid at home
I bought a ringflash, Nissin MF18, to reach the parts top flashes cannot reach and Tuesday was my first time I used it. The orchid was a test shot.
