Comma caterpillar at Steyning

Comma larva, Polygonia c-album
After a cool cloudy morning the sun poked through so after lunch I headed to Steyning to try for Brown Hairstreaks. Conditions were perfect, but the ten people hoping to see some action were disappointed. A male Brimstone, some Walls and a Small Tortoiseshell were the best sightings. I was nearly back to the car when I spotted a Comma caterpillar on a nettle, the first time I have seen one.

Digger wasp? on sawfly? or what?

Small Tortoiseshell, Aglais urticae
