Worms Wood and Channel Islands Pug

Green Shieldbug, Palomena prasina
On July 29th I found a rare moth outside my back door, the Channel Islands Pug. In the afternoon I visited Worms Wood, Middleton-on-Sea for the first time. This 13 hectare Woodland Trust site was planted with native trees and shrubs in 2000 and is an area of mixed habitat. I saw Red Admiral, Large Skipper, Gatekeeper, Meadow Brown, Speckled Wood, Comma and some interesting moths: Common Cloaked Shoot, Maiden's Blush, Mother of Pearl, Straw Dot, Yellow Shell, Dingy Footman, Cinnabar larvae on the ragwort and leaf mines of Stigmella moth larvae on oak leaves.

On August 3rd and 4th I returned to Worms Wood and found several moths: Cherry Fruit Moth, Clouded Border, Mocha, Cinnabar larvae plus butterflies: Large and Small Whites, Brown Argus, Large Skipper, Speckled Wood and Common Blues. I also spotted three types of galls on sessile oak leaves: Spangle Gall Wasp, Red Pea Gall Wasp and Artichoke Gall Wasp. A Common Darter rested on a twig.
