In search of the Emperor

Purple Emperor, Apatura iris
Yesterday I met Nigel at Southwater Woods where we spent a couple of hours enjoying the White Admirals that have emerged en masse during the past few days. There were also Ringlets, Speckled Woods, Meadow Browns and Silver-washed Fritillaries. Due to the high temperature they were all busy either searching for females or nectaring and did not stay long enough in one place for photos. We met Paul who showed us a photo of a Purple Emperor he took in Chiddingfold  Forest on Tuesday so we headed to Chiddingfold. As soon as we neared the Purple Emperor triangle, we saw Neil, Mark and Peter hovering over a perfect PE and were able to photograph this beautiful butterfly. We spotted three others later fighting above the tree canopy and diving into the  Sallows in search of the females which should emerge in a few days.
