Crow Garlic and Tortoiseshells at Anchor Bottom

Red Poppies, Papaver rhoeas
My Mill Hill transect on Friday showed the emergence of many Marbled Whites:
Adonis Blue 14 (all old), Brimstone 1, Marbled white 13, Meadow Brown 1, Red Admiral 1, Small Heath 23, Small Tortoiseshell  5, Speckled Wood 1.
The Marbled Whites were difficult to photograph as they were fluttering around looking for females in the heat, but occasionally I caught one when it dropped into the grass to rest.
Afterwards I visited Anchor Bottom and saw many Small Tortoiseshells on the South Downs Way flying east and some nectaring on thistles at the top of the slope. I studied a dried cow pat for a few minutes watching a Rove beetle darting out from the side and scuttling across the top. There were some interesting flies sharing this specialised habitat.
