Bewick Swans and Little Egrets

Bewick's Swans, Cygnus columbianus

This morning I joined Nigel and Murray Downland Trust volunteers at Heyshott Escarpment for my first conservation work party of 2014. On-off drizzle made fire-lighting challenging but a good blaze soon consumed the trees we cleared. Hopefully primroses and cowslips will grow here and prove attractive to future generations of Duke of Burgundy butterflies. We left damp but satisfied with our work. On the way home I checked out Arundel WWT where the Bewick Swans gave me a show. Finally from Mill Road, Arundel I spotted five Little Egrets feeding in the meadows, which are still water logged.
