Brookfield Park yields Painted Lady and Clouded Yellow

Painted Lady, Vanessa cardui
On Thursday I decided to complete some of the empty tetrads for the Sussex Butterfly Atlas. Linda joined me and proved to be an good spotter. We started at Brookfield Park, Littlehampton, which is an excellent conservation park with several wildflower areas. I recorded Essex Skipper, Small White, Common Blue, Painted Lady (spotted by Linda) and Small Tortoiseshell. At a site near Climping Linda spotted a pair of mating Red-tailed Bumblebees.

According to this website, Brookfield Park was created as a country park 1997-2000 and features a well established lake, wildflower meadows, young maturing trees, wildlife and several play areas.

On Friday I returned to Brookfield Park with Sue and added a Clouded Yellow to the count. Later I visited a new area at the National Trust's Slindon Estate where I found Small Skipper, Common Blue, Gatekeeper and Meadow Brown.
