Red-breasted Mergansers at Widewater

male Red-breasted Merganser, Mergus serrator
On Sunday morning blue skies appeared so I scurried off to Widewater Lagoon to see the Red-breasted Mergansers which have attracted attention among the birding community. Initially I had to be content with a Dunlin, a Redshank, a lot of Little Grebes, Mute Swans and Mallards. When  I check out the eastern end I saw six Mergansers and several large lenses protruding from cars. There were two males, three females and an immature bird. They moved near to the bank on several occasions which allowed for good views of their fishing activities and other behaviours.
