On Saturday the weather finally brightened up enough for me
to do my Mill Hill transect where the Adonis Blues are still doing well. A keen
eyed young naturalist found a Heart and Dart moth larva on the grass and I saw
a Pretty Chalk Carpet, a Yellow-spot Twist and a Chafer (Omaloplia ruricola). Small Tortoiseshell larvae were feeding on nettle.
I then visited Woods
Mill nature reserve to photograph more micro fauna. Many tiny Common Nettle-tap
moths were fluttering over the nettle beds. Other moths seen were Dark
Strawberry Tortrix, Clouded Border, Small Barred Long-horn, Meadow Grey and a Drinker caterpillar. Harlequin Beetles were everywhere
in a variety of patterns, including mating pairs. Other interesting specimens were a tiny Rove beetle (Tachyporus
obtusus) and an Alderfly (Sialis lutaria).
