the golden birdwing is actually Helena's birdwing (Troides helena)

and the butterfly in the photograph third from the bottom is not (Siproeta stelenes) Malachite but rather a Tailed Jay (Graphium agammemnon) in rest. :)

Hi Colin,

You've put some fantastic photos on your blog this year, but I think these ones of the Wood Whites are the best so far! The ones that capture the butterfly in flight are particularly impressive, although I also really like the one with the trees in the background (the 9th one down) - it has a fabulous 3D effect.

Hi Colin. Stunning photos of the Pearl Bordered Fritillary! It's good to know that they are starting to emerge. I'm looking forward to taking a trip to Rewell Wood to see them soon. Thank-you for posting the camera settings you used for your earlier Orange Tip photos. It was really interesting to see the different effects you were able to achieve and has inspired me try using the ' standard settings' a little bit less!

Paul, thanks for your comments. The tripod definitely made the roosting shots easier. My best two roosters were: 1. flash, 200th sec, f10; 2. no flash, 250th sec, f4.5. Both eliminated the background. The non-flash was a softer shot, lighter background (previous day's headline shot). The flash emphasised the lovely green/gold pattern (above). My best nectaring shot was no flash, 250th sec, f13 using monopod. Good focus given it was not straight on (previous day on Wood anemone). I use a Nikon D90 with 180mm Sigma close-up lens, also Canon G9 and Canon IXUS 950 compacts. I mostly shoot Speed priority.

Amazing as usual Col.

We (me and G) were lucky enough to spot a young roe deer before it saw us a couple of days ago and we watched it for a good 10 minutes before it disappeared into the hedge rows. My first thought was 'where's the bloody camera?' but did manage to relax and enjoy the moment.

Particularly enjoyed the wren photos. Such a tiny, yet brutally agressive bird. I wouldn't want to be an attacking stoat facing a stance like that!
